Some must-watch Bollywood travel movies include Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Chahta Hai and Jab We Met
By Karishma Shetty
Bollywood, recently, has been in a dicey space between South film remakes and sequels galore. The magic of Hindi cinema, from way back when, was rooted in the essence of originality and exploring popular genres like travel movies and rom-coms with a desi twist. As we enter the summer season — which for most of us is when we embark on adventurous vacations to escape the overpowering heat — we've curated a list of the best Bollywood travel movies of all time that you could bookmark as your holiday mood board. This includes Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Chahta Hai and Jab We Met, just to name a few, that you can take travel inspo from…
1. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video
Starting off our Best Bollywood travel movies of all time list is Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol and Katrina Kaif's road trip comedy is the ideal “bucket list” friendship trip that we all dream of during our broke college years. Giving us an intimate look at Spain and all its wonders like the Tomatina festival, this travel movie classic will forever be a masterclass on the genre.
2. Dil Chahta Hai - Netflix
Speaking of evergreen Bollywood travel movies, Dil Chahta Hai remains a timeless addition. Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna's friendship dramedy flaunts Goa at its finest with landmarks such as Chapora Fort becoming a tourist attraction. A trip with friends never looked this fun!
3. Jab We Met - Amazon Prime Video, JioCinema, MX Player
Giving mundane train journeys an adventurous “strangers” twist is Jab We Met. Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan's rom-com gives us a visual cultural tour of North India; from the colourful depiction of Punjab to the snowy aesthetics of Shimla and Manali. Travel movies have been Imtiaz Ali's forte and Jab We Met's chart-topping song Yeh Ishq Hai is evidence as to why.
4. Queen - Netflix, JioCinema
Going on solo trips can be daunting for many, but Queen realistically depicts the do's and don't to have a fulfilling vacation. Kangana Ranaut's dramedy sees the timid protagonist come into her own as she gets up to hilarious and heartwarming adventures while on a solo European trip. It's not just group trips that can be a joyous adventure, but going solo can be a whole lot of fun too.
5. Karwaan - Amazon Prime Video, MX Player
In today's cut-throat world of survival, it's very important to disengage and stabilise one's mental health. Travelling is a very important aspect in this case and Karwaan is one of the many cinematic examples that shows us why. Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan and Mithali Palkar's road trip entertainer is both, a visual aesthetic and healing watch.
6. Swades - Netflix
“Yeh jo des hai tera, swades hai tera.” A simple lyric from Swades with multi-layered meaning. While going on globe-trotting adventures seems like the better option, there truly will never be a feeling more riveting than coming back home. Shah Rukh Khan's drama film encapsulates India at its rawest while Yun Hi Chala Chal is one of the most iconic travel songs in Bollywood.
7. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - Amazon Prime Video, Theatres
Yash Chopra's depiction of foreign locations resonates with us even today and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is the ideal travel movie that desi tourists crave to recreate more than 25 years later. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's romance musical takes us around Europe through the lens of an NRI love story that stands the test of time. But it's not just foreign locations, DDLJ is also Yash Chopra's love letter to his homeland, Punjab.
