Please be aware that the Calanais Visitor Centre is currently closed for significant redevelopment, with plans to reopen in 2026. During this time, the Calanais Standing Stones will remain open and accessible to all visitors.

Please note that the Calanais Visitor Centre is closed for major redevelopment until the new and much improved centre reopens in 2026. Meanwhile, the Calanais Standing Stones remain open!

Located in the west coast of Lewis, the 5,000 year old Callanish Stones are famous all over the world.

The Calanais Standing Stones (or Callanish in its anglicised form) is a cruciform shaped stone circle, erected 5000 years and standing the elemental weather of the Outer Hebrides, there is much mystery surrounding their inception. While the centre is closed there is limited parking for cars on the shore road, where pedestrians can then follow the signs to walk up the hill to the stones.

As a charity dedicated to preserving the heritage and archaeology of Calanais and the Outer Hebrides, we have successfully raised £10.1 million to enhance the visitor experience at the centre. The construction began in July 2024, and the site is now closed to the public. Although this may cause some inconvenience, we believe that these improvements will yield long-term benefits for both our local community and visitors from around the globe.

The redevelopment project aims to create a 5-star attraction, significantly improving the overall visitor experience. We appreciate your understanding and support throughout this construction period and look forward to welcoming you back to a transformed visitor centre.
