Do Satmar and Lubavitch get along? ›

The most famous feud is between the Hungarian Satmar and the Russian/Polish Lubavitch, who divide over issues of outreach, openness to modern and secular custom and technology, and Zionism.

Satmar is characterized by extreme conservatism, complete rejection of modern culture, and strong religious anti-Zionism. The community sponsors a comprehensive education and media network in Yiddish, which is also the primary language used by its members.

Satmar Hasidism originated from the city of Szatmárnémeti, Hungary (now Satu Mare, Romania), where the sect was founded in 1905 by Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum as an offshoot of the Sighet dynasty which was led by Teitelbaum's father. When his father died, the position of Grand Rebbe passed to Teitelbaum's older brother.

Some Satmars live in Israel, but refuse to take part in elections there. They are therefore not politically represented, and castigate the Hasidim and ultra-Orthodox who take part in the country's political life even though they do not claim to be religious Zionists.
